If you’re staying with us in York this October, block off Saturday the 17th. That’s Harvestfest — the one day a year Short Sands Beach trades sandcastles for craft booths, and half the town shows up.

This is the 41st year the York Region Chamber of Commerce has put it on, and it’s grown into one of the bigger fall festivals on this stretch of coast. It’s not a huge production, and that’s the point — it’s a genuinely local event, not something built for tourists, which is exactly why guests tend to love it.

What to Expect

Harvestfest runs 9am to 4pm at Short Sands Beach in York Beach. Here’s what fills the day:

• 150+ craft and art booths — local makers, not mass-produced fair junk. Good spot to pick up something you actually can’t get anywhere else.
• Live music running throughout the day
• Local food vendors — go hungry
• Kidsfest — a dedicated kids’ area with games, rides, and hands-on activities. Pumpkin carving demos are a regular feature, so if you’ve got kids with you, plan to lose an hour here.

It’s a rain-or-shine, walk-around-and-graze kind of day. No tickets, no big lines — just show up.

Bonus: Fall Foliage at Mount Agamenticus

While you’re in town, don’t just stick to the beach. Mount Agamenticus — locals call it “Mount A” — is about 4 miles west of Route 1, and it’s one of the best foliage spots on this whole stretch of coast. It’s a modest peak at 692 feet, but the woods around it turn brilliant color by mid-to-late October, and there’s an observation tower at the summit with views that stretch out over the whole region on a clear day.

Trails range from easy to more challenging, so it works whether you’ve got kids in tow or want a real hike or bike ride. Give yourself an hour or two — pair it with Harvestfest for a full day out: hike or drive up Mount A in the morning, hit the festival in the afternoon.
